In recent tests, it has been found that air resistance inhibits the firing of long range projectiles, slowing them till they miss their mark. In order to combat this, we must design a catapult that can fire projectiles across specific ranges to use in the siege against air resistance.
Design
Initial Design:
The catapult will will be operated by attaching masses to the end of the launching block, increasing the force of gravity acting on the block. The block will be connected by string to a pouch containing the object to be launched. When tension in the string decreases at a certain angle, the ball will be released and fire.
Final Design:
Materials:
- Wood (blocks 2 by 4 inches)
- Nails
- Hammer
- Masses (10-50 Ibs)
- Metal Bar
TRial Launch:
Based on the data obtained from several launches, targets should be placed at distances of 31 m, 37 m and 42 m.
Test Day:
Results:
We managed to hit all 3 targets within 7 shots from the catapult. Our maximum range with the tennis ball was 52 m and our maximum range using a lacrosse ball was 70 m.

Advice For Future STUDENTS:

Jaideep: Trebuchet has a very complex working mechanism. The range depends upon the length of the sling, the counter mass, height of the axle and the ratio of the long arm to short arm. I advice the future students to practice their throws using only tennis ball but not a lacrosse ball ( like we did). Another important piece of advice would be that by just doubling the counter weight wont double your range. You might have to adjust the sling length with the doubled counterweight.
